Thinking About Writing a Book? Read This First.
So many people tell me they’ve always wanted to write a book—maybe you’ve said it too. And my response is always the same: You absolutely should… but only if you’re doing it for the right reasons.
Writing a book is one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself and for others. But it’s not for everyone. It’s not easy, quick, or guaranteed to make you money. What it is, though, is life-changing.
Whether you’re toying with the idea or deep in self-doubt, here’s a breakdown to help you decide if writing a book is truly for you.
Reasons You Should Write a Book
You have a story that could help others. Whether it’s messy, raw, inspiring, or a little bit of everything—your lived experience has value. Sharing it can change someone’s perspective, maybe even their life.
You want to help yourself heal or process. Writing is therapeutic. Putting words to your experiences is a way to make sense of things, release old versions of yourself, and step into new ones.
You feel called to create something lasting. Books live on. It’s a legacy you get to leave behind—something that outlives trends, social media, or algorithms.
You want to grow your brand or authority. If you're a coach, business owner, or speaker, writing a book instantly builds credibility. It shows you're serious about what you do.
You’ve always said “one day.” Let today be the day you stop waiting. There will never be a “perfect” time, but there’s power in starting before you’re ready.
Reasons You Shouldn't Write a Book
You hate writing. If the idea of sitting down and stringing words together makes you cringe, there are better ways to tell your story—like podcasting or speaking.
You just want to make money. Most books don’t become bestsellers overnight. If you’re in it solely for the cash, you’ll burn out before you even finish Chapter 3.
You’re doing it to impress someone. Writing a book is personal. It should come from you—not to prove something to others.
